Understanding the Problem
The Challenge
Plascon, a market leader in decorative paint, lacked a dedicated solution to assist homeowners with the common but complex challenge of repairs and maintenance, an area where uncertainty leads to user frustration and project failure.
The Business Goal
To capture an underserved market segment of maintenance-focused homeowners and solidify Plascon’s identity as an innovative, trusted advisor in the paint industry.
The User Problem
Time-poor homeowners with maintenance issues struggle to diagnose paint problems accurately and confidently select the right products, leading to failed projects, wasted resources, and a lack of trust in their own DIY abilities.
The Designing Starts
Discovery & Insight
Research identified a key underserved persona: the "Pragmatic Home Maintainer." This user is motivated not by creative decoration but by efficient, long-lasting problem-solving. They value durability and performance but are frustrated by technical jargon and a lack of reliable, context-specific guidance.
The Strategy & Key Decision
My strategy was to develop an AR-first mobile application that acts as a "trusted expert in your pocket." The key decision was to leverage AR to provide contextual, in-situ guidance, transforming the user's smartphone into a powerful diagnostic and instructional tool that eliminates guesswork.
The Solution
The final solution is a multi-featured AR application that guides users through the entire repair journey. It includes an AR Scanner to diagnose paint failures by analyzing the physical wall, a Product & Quantity Calculator to recommend the precise solution, and an AR Instructor to provide step-by-step visual guidance for flawless application.
Takeaway
Impact
This solution is designed to deliver significant value to both the user and the business.
Lesson Learned
This project demonstrated that for technical consumer products, the greatest value lies in bridging the user's knowledge gap. Empowering the user with contextual, just-in-time guidance through AR is a more powerful driver of confidence and loyalty than any traditional marketing.
